One
of the most majestic sights at Martin Mere is the Whooper
Swan, one of Britains two migratory swan species, the other
being Bewick's. Whoopers breed in Iceland
and migrate to Britain for the winter, often flying at altitudes
of over 29 000 feet whilst on migration, and enduring temperatures
of minus 28 degrees Centigrade.
All swans have white plumage, except the Black Swan of Australia
and the Black Necked Swan of South America.
Swans never dive, but have long necks which are used for reaching
underwater food, rather like an underwater Giraffe!
